Use Distance to Manage a Distraction

Use this any time you're introducing a new distraction to a familiar skill.

  1. 1Start with a version of the distraction that is easy enough for your dog to notice and still respond to basic cues.
  2. 2Give your dog a little time to observe the distraction.
  3. 3If your dog can stay settled and respond to you, continue training at that level.
  4. 4Move a little closer only when your dog is settled and able to pay attention at the current level of distraction.
  5. 5If your dog stops responding to basic cues, increase the distance or make the distraction less challenging.
  6. 6Build gradually, knowing that some distractions will be easier for your dog than others.

If your dog can't respond, make the situation easier or move farther away.
