Shape Voluntary Heel Position (Off-Leash Game)

Use this to build a dog who wants to be at your side, before adding any walking cue.

  1. 1Find a room with furniture in the middle and walls on two or three sides to create a natural channel.
  2. 2Position your dog on your left, closest to the furniture, with your right side near the wall.
  3. 3Hold several treats in your left hand and begin walking.
  4. 4Mark and place a piece of food on the ground when your dog takes a step with you.
  5. 5Continue marking and placing food as your dog catches up and matches your pace.
  6. 6Play for 10--15 rewards, then take a break --- no verbal cues or "heel" request during this game.

Use furniture and walls to create a channel, and reward your dog for catching up beside you.
