Handle a Long-Line Safely

Use this any time you're training recall or stay at a distance with a long-line attached.

Key Ideas

  1. 1Choose a 20-foot long line, ideally biothane (or cotton as an alternative).
  2. 2Stay conscious of the line at all times during training.
  3. 3Avoid tugging or pulling on it in a way that could punish your dog or pull them out of position.
  4. 4Never wrap the line around your wrist.
  5. 5Actively manage the line, drawing it in and out in circular loops as needed.
  6. 6Watch for tangles around your dog's legs and clear them promptly.

Actively feed the line in and out in loose loops — never use it to position your dog.
