Fade the Lure and Add a Verbal Cue

Use this once your dog reliably follows a lure and you're ready to remove it.

  1. 1Do a few reps with a treat in hand, marking and rewarding on completion.
  2. 2Pretend to hold a treat, repeating the same hand motion without one.
  3. 3Mark and reward after completion, even with no treat in hand.
  4. 4Alternate between using a treat and pretending to, so your dog follows the motion either way.
  5. 5Gradually use the lure less often until your dog reliably follows the hand cue alone.
  6. 6Once on a visual cue, add the verbal cue --- say it, wait half a second, then give the visual cue.

Fade the lure, not the reward.
