Extend the Stay with a 20-Foot Long-Line

Use this once your dog holds a solid stay at six feet and you're ready for more distance.

  1. 1Attach the 20-foot line to your dog's collar or harness for training (use the back clip of a Y-front harness for actual walks).
  2. 2Build distance slowly, just as you did earlier, aiming for zero mistakes rather than fast progress.
  3. 3Practice at each new distance for at least three reps before increasing.
  4. 4Use the ping-pong method: mix in some easier, shorter-distance reps even as you build toward the full 20 feet.
  5. 5Once solid at the full line length in one location, begin practicing in new locations.
  6. 6Treat each new location like a fresh start, and practice in at least 10 different spots.

Increase distance gradually and mix easier repetitions into the practice.
